Why Cruz Refused to Back Trump

Today Ted Cruz confirmed what many suspected—that he refused to endorse Donald Trump because of Trump’s personal attacks on his family.

Today Cruz confirmed that his refusal to back Trump was personal, saying he is not a “servile puppy dog” and vowing not to support anyone who wages personal attacks against his family.

Speaking to an incensed Texas delegation, Cruz explained why he broke his pledge to support the party’s official nominee.

“The day that was abdicated was the day this became personal,” Cruz said. “I’m not going to get into criticizing or attacking Donald Trump, but I’ll give you this response: I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father.”

“And that pledge was not a blanket commitment that if you go and slander and attack Heidi, I’m going to nonetheless come like a servile puppy dog and say thank you very much for maligning my wife and my father,” he added.

The mutual personal acrimony began in March, when a Pro-Cruz Super PAC released near-naked photos of Melania. Cruz denied being behind it, but Trump responded on March 23 by tweeting “Lyin’ Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin’ Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!” Of course, Trump had no beans to spill Instead he retaliated with the above tweet featuring Heidi Cruz and Melania Trump.

Cruz responded by taking the high road, tweeting shortly thereafter: “Donald, real men don’t attack women. Your wife is lovely, and Heidi is the love of my life.”

Cruz later addressed the situation during a television interview. “Last night Donald threatened my wife. He went directly after my wife. She is my best friend in the world,” Cruz blasted. “If Donald wants to get in a character fight, he’s better off stickin’ with me. Because Heidi is way out of his league,” he added.

The remark turned out to be a plagiarized from the 1995 Michael Douglas movie “The American President.” “You want a character debate, Bob? You better stick with me, ’cause Sydney Ellen Wade is way out of your league,” Douglas says.

Then Trump made controversial comments on abortion. Women all over the country responded negatively to the twin gaffs. It was one of the worst weeks of his campaign. Like the boy who got his hand caught in the cookie jar, Trump regretted that things had gone badly, not the crass act in itself:  “If I had to do it again,” he tweeted, “I wouldn’t have sent it”

On May 3, Cruz unloaded on Trump again as Indiana voters went to the polls, accusing him during a news conference of being a “pathological liar,” “utterly amoral,” “a narcissist at a level I don’t think this country’s ever seen” and “a serial philanderer.”

“This man is a pathological liar, he doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies … in a pattern that is straight out of a psychology text book, he accuses everyone of lying,” Cruz said as Indiana voters headed to cast their ballots.

“Whatever lie he’s telling, at that minute he believes it … the man is utterly amoral,” Cruz told reporters. “Donald is a bully … bullies don’t come from strength they come from weakness.”

“He is proud of being a serial philanderer … he describes his own battles with venereal diseases as his own personal Vietnam,” Cruz said, citing a decades-old Trump appearance on “The Howard Stern Show.”

Trump had also attacked Rafael Cruz, the Senator’s father. “And (Ted Cruz’s) father, you know, was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald’s, you know, being shot. I mean the whole thing is ridiculous,” Trump said in an interview on “Fox and Friends.” “I mean what was he doing with Lee Harvey Oswald, shortly before the death? Before the shooting? It’s horrible.”

Trump source was the National Enquirer, which is led by friend David Pecker. Some accused Trump of planting the story.

The remark led to swift criticism from many Republicans. South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, a fierce opponent of Trump, tweeted, “Any doubt left Trump is completely unhinged? His assertion Ted Cruz’s father was associated with Lee Harvey Oswald should remove ALL doubt.”

Remember the famous quote by Henry Clay? “I’d rather be right than President.” Clay never did become President, but he was more historically significant than most of the Presidents of his time.

Time will tell if the same thing happens to Ted Cruz.

Book Review: “Crisis of Character” Discloses Hillary’s Temperament

Crisis of Character is a tell-all book by former Secret Service agent Gary J. Byrne that reminds us—as if we need reminding—of the personal characteristics that make Hillary Clinton unfit to be President.

Byrne gained a measure of fame when he courageously told the truth about the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski affair in 1998 despite intense pressure to the contrary. In fact, there is more about Bill Clinton in the book than Hillary, and Byrne’s recounting of his role in the investigation is the most riveting part of his story.

It almost makes one wonder why no one has made an All the President’s Men-type movie about the Clinton scandals and impeachment. Well, we know that liberal Hollywood would never do such a thing, but there are some good independent filmmakers out there.

If you were to believe the promotion campaign for the book, you would think that it is all about Hillary Clinton. It is not, but what’s in it about her is revealing.  Without disclosing any spoilers, the presumptive Democratic nominee is shown, through several examples, to be two-faced, arrogant, manipulative, calculating, temperamental, vindictive and tyrannical.

None of this is surprising to any of us who have been paying attention to the Clintons for the past 25 years. Nevertheless, the book manages to provide an interesting and well-told view of life in the White House during the 1990s.

The latter part of the book describes Byrne’s time in as a US Air Marshall in the post 9-11 years. While these chapters have their value, they have nothing to do with the Clintons. Political junkies would do well to skip them.

If you want a better summary of the reasons why Hillary Clinton should not be President, try Clinton Cash by Peter Schweizer. But if you want a light, summer read that sheds light on her personality flaws, Crisis of Character is just the ticket.

FBI Settled Classified Documents Case Similar to Clinton’s

Less than one year ago, the FBI accepted a “guilty” plea from a person accused of illegally removing and retaining classified documents.

No, the settlement was not with Hillary Clinton. Bryan H. Nishimura, 50, of Folsom, California, pleaded guilty to the charge.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Kendall J. Newman immediately sentenced Nishimura to two years of probation, a $7,500 fine, and forfeiture of personal media containing classified materials. Nishimura was further ordered to surrender any currently held security clearance and to never again seek such a clearance.

According to the FBI press release, Nishimura was a Naval Reservist deployed in Afghanistan in 2007 and 2008. Nishimura had access to classified briefings and digital records that could only be retained and viewed on authorized government computers. Nishimura, however, caused the materials to be downloaded and stored on his personal, unclassified electronic devices and storage media. He carried such classified materials on his unauthorized media when he traveled off-base in Afghanistan and, ultimately, carried those materials back to the United States at the end of his deployment. The investigation did not reveal evidence that Nishimura intended to distribute classified information to unauthorized personnel.

The parallels to Mrs. Clinton’s case are obvious. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

Fellow Dems Turn on Cuomo

Even Democrats are criticizing New York Governor Andrew Cuomo over his botched handling of the Hoosick Falls water crisis.

Recently disclosed documents proved that Cuomo arrogantly ignored federal findings of polluted water in the rural upstate village.

Foremost among the Democrats turning against Cuomo are both US Senators from New York State, Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillebrand. The Senators, plus Representative Paul Tonko, have called for Congressional hearings into Cuomo’s failure to heed Federal EPA warnings about the village’s water supply.

Schumer in particular was critical of Cuomo.

“We can’t just shrug our shoulders and say ‘oh, bad stuff happened, Schumer told Politico. “We have an obligation to those people, so a hearing is a good thing to find out what happened. But we have to do a lot more than that: water has to be cleaned up, people have to be tested, and whatever remediation occurs has to be done.”

This is not the first time that Schumer has turned on Cuomo.

Most notably, Schumer failed to defend Cuomo when U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, a Schumer protégé, launched an investigation into Mr. Cuomo’s controversial disbanding of the Moreland Commission. Cuomo had created the ethics commission, promising it would be an independent body free to investigate his office, but ended it when the commission set its sights on his own administration.

Perhaps even more telling, a Democratic State Senator, Andrea Stewart-Cousins (Dem.-Yonkers), has called for a Hoosick Falls investigation as well. Just one year ago, no Democratic State Senator—and few Republican State Senators—would have dared to challenge the famously vindictive Cuomo. Now a Democratic Senator has defied Cuomo’s leadership just when he is desperate to sweep the entire matter under the rug.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has dismissed news reports about the state’s extended period of inaction in Hoosick Falls as a “political he-said, she-said.” Nevertheless, he cannot ignore attacks from within his own party.

Once upon a time, Cuomo hoped for a keynote speaker position, or even a vice-Presidential nod, from the upcoming Democratic convention. That’s all out the window now.

Oh, how the mighty Cuomo has fallen.
