Finding Sgt. Hutchinson: The Meaning of Memorial Day

Memorial Day—like Christmas, some would say— has lost some of its true meaning for most people who observe it.

Memorial Day weekend has become the unofficial beginning of the summer season.  Nearly everyone attends a picnic, parade, or family gathering and enjoys the warm weather. Too few remember that the holiday is intended as a day of remembrance of those who died in the defense of our nation. Even fewer take the time to decorate the graves of the fallen.

Last year, as guilty as anyone, I attended a neighborhood barbeque in Troy, New York, on Memorial Day weekend. Somehow the conversation turned to a book I’ve been working on concerning US airmen shot down over Yugoslavia during World War II. Do you know, one neighbor asked, that an airman who was killed in Yugoslavia is buried nearby, in Elmwood Hill Cemetery?

Soon my girlfriend Heather and I were off to find the grave. The man’s name was Staff Sgt. Martin C. Hutchinson, and he shared a gravestone with his parents, Irene and Charles Hutchinson. We shopped for a small flag—a surprisingly difficult task considering it was Memorial Day weekend—and placed it at the site. I also resolved to use the resources at my disposal to find out more about him.

Marty Hutchinson, it turns out, was a pleasant young man with an artistic bent who looked something like the actor Colin Hanks. Like most kids in the 1930s, he was an aviation enthusiast and enjoyed making model airplanes. A year after graduating from Watervliet High School in 1941, he volunteered for the Army Air Forces hoping to become a pilot.

Hutchinson’s mediocre eyesight disqualified him from flight training. He did, however, possess remarkable mechanical aptitude. He trained at the Boeing aircraft plant in Seattle and became a B-17 flight engineer. As such, Hutchinson was the chief enlisted man on the heavy bomber’s ten-man crew. His importance in keeping the aircraft aloft was second only that of the two pilots.

Hutchinson planned to marry his girlfriend Norma before he shipped overseas. When his leave fell through, Norma flew to Texas and married him. Two days later, she followed him to Nebraska, his final staging point. There they enjoyed a few more days of married life. Norma wrote to Martin’s parents, exalting that their time together was “too wonderful to be true and too good to last.”

Hutchinson’s crew was assigned to the 2nd Bomb Group stationed in Italy. They began flying combat missions on January 24, 1944. Most of his targets were aircraft factories and transportation facilities in northern Italy, Austria, and Germany.

Hutchinson’s most costly mission occurred on February 22, 1944, during the “Big Week” all-out air offensive against the Luftwaffe. Thirty-Five B-17s from his Bomb Group took off that morning against an aircraft factory in Styr, Austria. Fourteen failed to return. Hutchinson happened to be flying in the middle of the formation. Nearly every plane to his rear was shot down by fighters, including the two directly behind him. No doubt, he felt very lucky to have survived.

On March 18, 1944, Hutchinson’s target was a vital airfield in Villaobra, Italy. Enemy fighters, determined to defend the airbase, rose and swarmed all over Hutchinson’s formation. Sometime during the dogfight, a JU-88—a German twin-engine aircraft—launched its rockets. One struck Hutchinson’s B-17 and exploded on contact, nearly severing its tail. The plane jerked violently, turned on its back, and fell into a spin.

Hutchinson was likely stationed in the upper machine gun turret, the position that flight engineers took when fighters approached. He and most of the crew were trapped inside.

Only two crewmen reached an escape hatch in the B-17’s nose. Lt. Adam Pryzyna, the bombardier, bailed out and survived.  Lt. Charles Evert, the navigator, managed to claw his way out of the hatch, but too late. By then the plane was too close to the ground and his parachute did not have time to blossom.

Yugoslavians from Gerovo, Croatia, found the wreckage the next day. Their sympathies were with the Partisan underground. They carried the airmen’s bodies to the nearest town and gave them an ornate Catholic funeral with full military honors. Every villager attended. They garlanded the graves with flowers and wreaths.

Sgt. Hutchinson is not buried at the gravesite in Troy that bears his name. A few years after his death, officials from the American Graves Registration Commission reinterned the crew’s bodies. They gave Hutchinson’s mother, Irene, the option of having his body brought home. She decided that he would have wanted to be buried with his crewmates. His final resting place is the American military cemetery in Florence, Italy: Plot H, Row 11, Grave 34.

Later, the Gold Star Mothers asked Irene if she wanted to march in a Memorial Day parade in Altamont. They told her that they wanted to honor her for giving her son to the war. “I didn’t give my son to war,” Irene snapped, “it took him.” She did not march.

Still, I like to think that Irene would not begrudge us a picnic on Memorial Day weekend—so long as the true meaning of the holiday is not forgotten. After all, one such picnic led to a better appreciation of her son’s sacrifice.

And didn’t men like Sgt. Martin C. Hutchinson give up their lives so that the rest of us could enjoy the blessings of freedom?

Cuomo Passes the Buck on Poisoned Water

On Tuesday, Cuomo Administration officials attempted to blame the Federal Environmental Agency for its own failure to warn the citizens of the upstate town of Hoosick Falls that their water was poisoned.

The statements occurred at a hearing held by the Republican-controlled state Senate. Two more Senate hearings will follow.

It was a Clintonesque pattern of delay, deny, deflect, and diffuse until the scandal cools off. For almost three hours, commissioners for the New York State departments of health and environmental conservation repeatedly claimed that the EPA had failed to provide clear guidance on the PFOA chemicals found in the town’s water supply. PFOA, a chemical used in a Teflon plant long operating in the area, has been linked to cancers, thyroid issues and other serious health problems in humans.

The contentions by Cuomo’s surrogates are contradicted by State documents proving that Governor Andrew Cuomo ignored federal findings of polluted water in the upstate rural village of Hoosick Falls.

The documents show that Cuomo’s administration dismissed Federal EPA calls to alert the people of Hoosick Falls to the crisis. Moreover, Cuomo’s officials actively disputed the concerns of the EPA specialists.

EPA has long held that 400 parts of PFOA per trillion in a water supply is dangerous. Later, they lowered the level to 100 parts and still later 70 parts per trillion. Regardless, at the time Cuomo administration officials were assuring residents that  their water was safe, the municipal water supply had already tested at 600 parts per trillion, far greater than the EPA’s original threshold.

EPA Regional Director Judith Enck was having none of Cuomo’s dissembling. “The EPA had numerous discussions with the state of New York,” Enck told POLITICO New York. “They were not confused, they disagreed. The reason they told EPA at the time was they felt like our 400 number had a large margin of safety and therefore they did not rely on that as the number to follow.”

Last December, the EPA finally bypassed Cuomo and warned residents against drinking the tainted water.  The Cuomo administration finally took action against the polluters a month later.

Don’t look for a Harry Truman-like “The Buck Stops Here” sign on Andrew Cuomo’s desk. You won’t find one.

Fellow Dems Turn on Cuomo

Even Democrats are criticizing New York Governor Andrew Cuomo over his botched handling of the Hoosick Falls water crisis.

Recently disclosed documents proved that Cuomo arrogantly ignored federal findings of polluted water in the rural upstate village.

Foremost among the Democrats turning against Cuomo are both US Senators from New York State, Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillebrand. The Senators, plus Representative Paul Tonko, have called for Congressional hearings into Cuomo’s failure to heed Federal EPA warnings about the village’s water supply.

Schumer in particular was critical of Cuomo.

“We can’t just shrug our shoulders and say ‘oh, bad stuff happened, Schumer told Politico. “We have an obligation to those people, so a hearing is a good thing to find out what happened. But we have to do a lot more than that: water has to be cleaned up, people have to be tested, and whatever remediation occurs has to be done.”

This is not the first time that Schumer has turned on Cuomo.

Most notably, Schumer failed to defend Cuomo when U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, a Schumer protégé, launched an investigation into Mr. Cuomo’s controversial disbanding of the Moreland Commission. Cuomo had created the ethics commission, promising it would be an independent body free to investigate his office, but ended it when the commission set its sights on his own administration.

Perhaps even more telling, a Democratic State Senator, Andrea Stewart-Cousins (Dem.-Yonkers), has called for a Hoosick Falls investigation as well. Just one year ago, no Democratic State Senator—and few Republican State Senators—would have dared to challenge the famously vindictive Cuomo. Now a Democratic Senator has defied Cuomo’s leadership just when he is desperate to sweep the entire matter under the rug.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has dismissed news reports about the state’s extended period of inaction in Hoosick Falls as a “political he-said, she-said.” Nevertheless, he cannot ignore attacks from within his own party.

Once upon a time, Cuomo hoped for a keynote speaker position, or even a vice-Presidential nod, from the upcoming Democratic convention. That’s all out the window now.

Oh, how the mighty Cuomo has fallen.

Trump Mentioned Several Times in Democratic Report on Benghazi

Yesterday the Select Committee on Benghazi’s Democratic minority issued a 345 page report accusing Republican congressmen of conduction an expensive, partisan, and skewed investigation into Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s handling of the Benghazi attack.

Yet the Democratic report itself is a distorted, blatantly political document.

The Democratic report slams the Republican majority for spending more than $7 million dollars on the investigation. One is reminded of Dr. Evil’s ransom demand of “one MILLION dollars” in the Austin Powers movie. Seven million dollars barely pays for an Obama vacation these days.

Even more telling is the report’s several mentions of presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.

What does Donald Trump have to do with the events in Benghazi? Or with the congressional investigation? Nothing, of course. Yet somehow Trump is relevant in the Democratic report.

In fact, it appears that the Democrats could hardly wait to mention Trump. His name first appears in the executive summary, on p. 8.

“During our hearing with Secretary Clinton,” the report states. “Rep. Pompeo argued that the Select Committee had obtained “over 600 requests” for security from Benghazi, but he refused to provide the evidence for his claim. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump took up this allegation himself, claiming: “Look at Benghazi, our ambassador. He wired her 500 or 600 times asking for help.”

And?

Trump appears again on pages 135-6.

Republicans have repeatedly accused Secretary Clinton of personally and knowingly endangering the lives of the four Americans killed in Benghazi. These accusations are based on no evidence, or evidence that is unsubstantiated or distorted, and they are often cloaked in extreme rhetoric that has no basis in fact. These accusations have also been used as part of the presidential campaign and by Republican candidates for president. For example…presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump stated: “Then, instead of taking charge that night, Hillary Clinton decided to go home and sleep. Incredible.”

Wow. That’s some evidence of bias on the part of the Trey Gowdy committee!

And pages 143-3.

“Nevertheless, Republicans have spent years trying to find Secretary Clinton personally at fault for the Benghazi attacks. Select Committee Republicans expanded the scope of the investigation to cover more than a year prior to the attacks in order to try to link Secretary Clinton’s advocacy for military intervention in Libya in 2011 to the Benghazi attacks in September 2012. This argument has been adopted on the 2016 presidential campaign trail. For example, in October 2015, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump had the following exchange on NBC’s Meet the Press….”

Thank goodness we have Congressmen like these to tell us that Republicans, including Trump, have been critical of Clinton’s botched handling of the security arrangements for the diplomatic compound, her inexcusable nonfeasance during the crisis, and her repeated lies about the causes of the attack.

And it’s the majority’s report that’s politically motivated. Oh, please.

There’s More Behind the Obama Redaction Debacle Than Meets the Eye.

Yesterday the FBI released redacted transcripts of the Orlando shooter’s conversations with law enforcement officials. All of Omar Mateen’s references to Islam and ISIS were eliminated. Under pressure from Speaker Paul Ryan and others, the Administration reversed itself and released the full transcript.

The transcript quotes Mateen as claiming to “pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi of the Islamic State.”

But who made the original decision to redact the transcript? And who made the call to release it in full?

People presume that Obama’s Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, made the decision to redact. She was certainly tasked to defend it. “What we’re not going to do is further proclaim this man’s pledges of allegiance to terrorist groups and further his propaganda,” she declared improbably.

Obama’s Secretary Josh Earnest immediately disavowed the redaction. “All of the decisions about releasing the transcripts were made by Justice Department officials” he claimed, distancing the White House from the entire mess.

Many are skeptical that Lynch made either decision on her own. Yet even if she did, she likely made it with confidence that the White House would back her up. Obama constantly bends reality to suit his agenda. Does anyone remember when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UN Ambassador Susan Rice were tasked with convincing the media that the Benghazi attack was based on an internet video?

In addition, the redaction was consistent with Obama’s insistence that the FBI take a politically-correct stance with regard to Moslem-related terrorist threats. Former FBI assistant director James Kallstrom had commented on the topic just days before during an interview on The Kelly File on Fox News.

Kallstrom, who still has close ties to the FBI, said that field agents are “petrified” of being fired because of White House orders that they cannot investigate “anything to do with Muslims” in the traditional way the bureau would pursue criminals or potential criminals and terrorists.

Charles Krauthammer has argued that the reversed redaction displays a “fanatical” aversion to even an indirect aspersion against Islam. “You’ve got an administration that has no respect for historical record — for actual events. That’s a larger issue, and it’s disturbing.”

The problem here for Obama was that the truth was already disclosed by a liberal news outlet and could not be swept under the rug. Thus he pushed Loretta Lynch under the proverbial bus.

Maybe it will come out that Obama ordered the redaction. And if even if he did not, it certainly occurred in concert with the pro-Islam tenor of his Administration.

Cuomo Ignored Poisoned Water Crisis

Recently disclosed documents prove that Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York ignored federal findings of polluted water in the upstate rural village of Hoosick Falls.

The documents, attained by Politico via the state’s Freedom of Information Act, show that Cuomo’s administration dismissed Federal EPA calls to alert the people of Hoosick Falls to the crisis. Moreover, Cuomo’s officials actively disputed the concerns of the EPA specialists.

Last November, the EPA finally bypassed Cuomo and warned residents against drinking the tainted water.

The water is contaminated by PFOA, a chemical used in a Teflon plant long operating in the area. PFOA has been linked to cancers, thyroid issues and other serious health problems in humans.

Local residents have long protested Cuomo’s apathy. Several of them have commissioned their own blood tests which confirm that the contaminated water has poisoned them with cancer-causing chemicals. These blood tests show much higher levels of PFOA in their bloodstream than Cuomo’s administration admits. Worst of all, children in the area are evidencing higher levels of toxins than their elders.

Nevertheless, the Democrat-dominated State Assembly declined to embarrass Cuomo by investigating the situation.

Now the recently-disclosed documents have prompted calls for further investigation.  Congressman Chris Gibson (R-Kinderhook) has asked the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to investigate the matter.

Last week, Republican State Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin called on US Attorney Preet Bharara to conduct a probe into the Hoosick Falls water disaster. Bharara is already investigating allegations of Cuomo corruption regarding the Buffalo Billion economic development program.

Meanwhile New York’s Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, a Democrat, recently launched an investigation into ExxonMobil because he deems that the company has violated “settled science” regarding “climate change.” There is no sign of Schneiderman being concerned about the water crisis occurring within 25 miles of the state capital in Albany.

During the same time frame, the water crisis in Flint, Michigan has gained national attention and several Congressional hearings.

Where is the outcry for the citizens of Hoosick Falls?

Corrupt Cuomo Cozy with SolarCity

Many observers of New York State politics are well familiar with US Attorney Preet Bharara’s investigation into Governor Andrew Cuomo’s handling of the Buffalo Billion project. But few are aware of Cuomo’s cozy relationship with billionaire Elon Musk, head of SolarCity, the company that will benefit from the state investment.

Yesterday, on May 25, 2016, New York State’s Public Authority Control Board quietly approved $485 million in state funds for construction of the SolarCity project in Buffalo. The vote by the Board was originally scheduled for last week but was postponed when reporters asked whether the vote would go forward given the ongoing Federal probe.

At the time, Cuomo insisted that the delay in the vote was “just a scheduling issue. Yesterday he said that wanted people to “have total confidence and trust in the integrity of this government” and welcomed the scrutiny by Federal agents.

The $485 million in taxpayer money will fund the remaining work on the SolarCity project, including $50 million in cost overruns for work at the construction site.

Cuomo’s close ties to SolarCity’s Elon Musk extend at least back to 2013. Cuomo did Musk a favor, then by successfully working with the state Legislature enact legislation that helped another Musk company, Telsa Motors.

Musk repaid the favor when Cuomo was running for reelection in 2014. Cuomo, who had lost the Buffalo region in 2010, was in trouble. The Buffalo Billion economic development program was faltering. One of its key companies, Silevo, a solar manufacturer, was faltering. Musk bought out the company and SolarCity assumed its place in the development scheme.

The move spared Cuomo from a high profile disaster-in-the-making. Cuomo won the Buffalo area in the election and retained the governorship.

Suddenly, instead of a $225 million incentive, taxpayers would be paying three times that much to build a much larger facility for billionaire Musk — 1 million square feet, almost four times the original size. The state would technically own the building. SolarCity would pay annual rent of $1 and no property taxes.

Meanwhile SolarCity was named one of only two companies allowed to participate in Cuomo’s K-Solar Program, which is designed to encourage New York State schools to adapt to solar power sources. In January 2016, Cuomo announced the New York Institute for Special Education in the Bronx will be the site of the state’s first solar schools project. The vendor? SolarCity, of course.

In April 2016, the other K-Solar participant, SunEdison, declared bankruptcy. That leaves SolarCity with a monopoly over the State’s K-program.

Then, on May 23, 2016—two days before the State’s approval of the $485 million for Musk— another state agency granted SolarCity the right to bring solar energy to as many as 65 Long Island school districts. The Long Island newspaper Newsday did connect the deal with the imminent approval of another $485 million for SolarCity across the state in Buffalo.

SolarCity has acknowledged that Federal agents have been in contact with the company and says it is cooperating with the investigation.

Is it any wonder that the Feds are taking a look?

Cuomo Corruption Delays Buffalo Billion

The Federal probe into corruption in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration has delayed funding for a key economic development project in Buffalo.

On Wednesday, the State’s Public Authorities Control Board (PACB) failed to approve $485 million in funds slated for Buffalo’s SolarCity project, a key part of the Buffalo Billion Economic development program. A vote by its three-member board is postponed for at least a week.

No estimates were provided on how long construction can continue under currently approved funding. Sooner or later, however, construction will cease absent the PACB’s approval of the funds.

The three members of the oversite panel are State Budget Director Robert Mujica, representing Cuomo, and counterparts representing Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie, D-Bronx, and Senate Majority Leader John J. Flanagan Jr., R-Huntington. Although the three parties must vote unanimously to release the funds, approvals by the obscure panel are usually routine.

Cuomo has been distancing himself from Alain Kaloyeros, the key Cuomo aide who is the subject of the Federal investigation. “If we find out someone did something wrong, I will be the first to throw the book at them because public trust is crucially important to me,” the governor added.

.The vote was postponed when reporters asked whether the vote would go forward given the ongoing probe by US Attorney Preet Bharara.

Meanwhile, Cuomo insisted that “On the PACB issue, that’s just a scheduling issue.” Cuomo went on to say that beyond the approval of the board, the funding would now be subject to the approval of Bart Schwartz, who Cuomo hired to investigate the allegations.

Observers of the ongoing shenanigans in Albany remember that Cuomo appointed an ethics oversight committee popularly known as the Moreland Commission, to investigate wrongdoings. Cuomo disbanded the Commission when it turned its attention to the Cuomo Administration. The action prompted a Federal investigation into allegations that the Governor’s office had interfered with the Commission’s inquiries.

In March 2106, a Cuomo confident, Seth Agata, was named to New York State’s Joint Commission on Public Ethics. Two members of the Board resigned immediately, apparently in protest.

A government watchdog, Reinvent Albany, criticized Agata’s appointment. “It is simply not credible that Mr. Agata, who was Governor Cuomo’s lawyer and represented him on ethics issues can objectively investigate potential ethical violations by the governor or his political enemies,” said the group’s director, John Kaehny. “We believe that it is incredibly difficult for any person to discard long-held loyalties and personal obligations. Mr. Agata served in a trusted position very close to Governor Cuomo and even represented the governor before JCOPE. The conflict of interest is obvious.”

Now Cuomo’s hand-pick investigator into the actions of his own Administration has a vote in releasing funds for a Cuomo project.

No wonder Cuomo was comfortable endorsing the corrupt Hillary Clinton.

The stench suffusing the Cuomo administration just keeps getting more pungent.

A Vote For Kasich Is A Vote For Trump

Republican voters heading to the New York primary polls have three choices: Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and John Kasich.

But a vote for Kasich is really a vote for Trump. The reason is simple.  He splits the anti-Trump vote and has no chance of winning the nomination himself.

Kasich has won only 148 delegates, fewer than Macro Rubio, who dropped out a long month ago. If he won every single remaining delegate, he would still fall short.

Moreover, Kasich must win eight states to have his name put into nomination for President under the current Republican Convention rules. He has won only one state so far, his native Ohio.  He will not win any others going forward.

So why is Kasich still running? Pure ego? A quixotic hope that the establishment will turn toward him rather than Trump or Cruz in a brokered convention? Maybe.

The fact is that Kasich’s continued candidacy helps only one man, Donald Trump.  He could not be helping Trump more if he planned too, except that he might possess the very votes needed to deny Trump the nomination on the first ballot.

Hmm…

That would also give Kasich the votes to give the nomination to Trump on the second or third ballot in return for the vice-presidency. Kasich denies that he is running for vice-president, but of course he would, especially if it were so.

There can only be one conclusion.

If one wants to cast an anti-Trump vote, there is only one choice left: Ted Cruz.

Is Trump Self-Financing His Campaign? Not quite.

Donald Trump has famously declared “I’m self-funding my own campaign. It’s my money.”

The declaration is the basis of much of his support. Trump followers are convinced that he is the one candidate who is not beholding to special interest groups.

But is Trump really self-financed? The answer is “sort of, but not quite.”

Trump’s self-financing accounts for $26.7 million, or 71% of his campaign money so far, according to his FEC filings. Nearly half of this money, $12.6 million, has come in the form of loans from Trump to his campaign. These loans imply that he hopes to be repaid by the campaign by Election Day.

$2.7 million of Trump’s campaign payments have been made for services rendered by Trump-affiliated companies. Much of this money is related to Trump’s travel in his personal jet.

Non-Trump donors account for 28 percent of Trump’s campaign finances.

In addition, a pro-Trump Super PAC, Make America Great Again, has raised $1,732,684 for ads promoting Trump.

So is Trump’s campaign self-financed? As with many financial questions, the answer is “it depends upon how you count it.”

Below are the facts and figures.
